Channeling self discovery through social interactions;
derived and perceived emotions from interacting in a large gathering for a dissociated individual were captured through creating this piece with clay as an alternate response to anxiousness and overwhelm, synonymous with an underwater feeling.
This piece explores the capacity of art and materials as a coping mechanism for anxiety. Created during an active social interaction trigger where the initial reaction is often overwhelm by virtue of the individual’s personality; an alternate response of channeling the energy of overwhelm in an healthy way is born, to process and embrace these feelings while accessing the cathartic relief of art through the therapeutic capacities of clay. This process led to a method of cultivating mental ease and a balance to self while subverting the fragility of clay for the versatility in/of its strength.
Each cut on this piece was married with the box breathing technique thereby fostering the cultivation of ease as the work was being created.
