Clay as Memory, Archive, and Flux: A Practice of Depth, Discovery and Possibilities

Olúbùnmi Atéré

Ceramicist and Conceptual Artist

My practice is a quiet dialogue with impermanence, curiosity, and transformation. Rooted in the raw, unfiltered language of clay, I embrace entropy as both material and metaphor—an ever-evolving process of shaping, eroding, and becoming. My hands work in tandem with time, allowing forms to emerge with the rhythms of intuition, history, and decay.
Like the philosophy of wabi-sabi, I find beauty in the incomplete, the vulnerable, the shifting states between what was and what is yet to come. My work holds space for ambiguity, inviting viewers into a contemplative unraveling—where symbols whisper rather than dictate, where rough edges are not flaws but stories in themselves.
Through ceramics, experimental forms, mixed media, and storytelling, I synthesize the tactile with the ephemeral, grounding the intangible within earthen memory. The work does not seek resolution; it welcomes the quiet imperfection of being, leaving room for wonder, acceptance, and the subtle alchemy of change.
My work bridges the personal and collective, challenging form and interpretation while documenting Nigerian heritage, exploring ambiguity, and abstracting vivid experiences. Through this process, I spark curiosity, connection, and reflection on the stories we inherit and create. Fearlessly expanding its reach, my practice remains intimate yet impactful, serving as a compass for navigating shared histories and shaping authentic futures.
